What Your MIPS Registry Isn\u2019t Telling You. . . And How It Can Hurt You<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The CMS requires MIPS registries to update practices on their submission status four times each year, with the first of those being in April.\u00a0\u00a0 But most practices haven\u2019t heard anything about their MIPS compliance.<\/p>\n

A Registry\u2019s Inexperience Can Hurt You<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Outpatient rehab is awash in new MIPS registries that were created for 2019.\u00a0 Many of these started accepting data late, well after 1\/1\/19.\u00a0 Worse yet, most of their practices, \u201chave heard nothing\u201d about MIPS submission trends.\u00a0 It is unclear if these inexperienced registries are unaware of the CMS\u2019 requirement to report practices\u2019 submission trends in April, if they simply don\u2019t know how to put the data in the correct format, or if they\u2019re in \u201cfake it \u2018til you make it\u201d mode.<\/p>\n

Many Practices Who Diligently Submit MIPS, Will Still Face Takebacks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You can perform perfectly, but with the wrong codes<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Many MIPS measures are \u201ctopped out.\u201d Submission is rewarded with 3 points<\/li>\n
  • While many other MIPS measures reward up to 10 points<\/li>\n
  • Which measures are you submitting?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your submission volume may be too low<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    • To qualify in 2019, a minimum of 20 encounters must be reported for each measure<\/li>\n
    • Which means that Q1 should be trending at 5 or more encounters<\/li>\n
    • How many encounters have your practice submitted in Q1?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Submission distribution percentage vs. total population is important<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      • MIPS reporting is required for 60% of eligible patients<\/li>\n
      • Where does your practice stand?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        If you\u2019re late to this party, it gets expensive<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \n
        • At the end of May we\u2019ll be more than 40% through 2019<\/li>\n
        • Which means less than 60% of the year remains<\/li>\n
        • Which means there won\u2019t be enough time to achieve a 60% distribution for the 10-point code if you\u2019ve been diligently submitting the 3-point topped-out codes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Why Are You Paying (A Lot) of Money, for a Non-Compliant Registry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

            \n
          • You\u2019re paying thousands of dollars to your MIPS registry<\/li>\n
          • For non-compliant performance<\/li>\n
          • Putting your practice at a significant and completely unacceptable financial risk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Watch for These Warning Signs<\/strong><\/h3>\n

            When asked for submission trends, the registry answers, \u201cWe don\u2019t submit data to the CMS until early 2020. \u00a0There\u2019s nothing to report.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            • The CMS requires the registry to update the status, consistency, and quality of data submission that you\u2019re sending to them (the registry), four times each year<\/li>\n
            • This allows the practice to adjust and fine tune submission quality, ensuring high scores once the data is finally sent in early 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Registries that advise, \u201cDon\u2019t worry about MIPS.\u00a0 It will probably be phased out, just like G-Codes were\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

              • Translation: \u201cWe don\u2019t know what we\u2019re talking about\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                And the biggest warning sign of all:\u00a0 \u201cSilence\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

                • If you\u2019re not being updated on MIPS status, it\u2019s time to:\n
                    \n
                  • Stop paying extra for non-compliance<\/li>\n
                  • Demand data, NOW<\/li>\n
                  • And look elsewhere for a competent registry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
